The city of Varanasi is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. Previously named Benares, it is one of the oldest populated cities in the world. It covers 112 km2 and has more than 1 million inhabitants. It is bordered by the Ganges river and is one of the 7 sacred cities of Hinduism.
