Carcassonne is a French commune located in the department of Aude in the Occitanie region. The city of Carcassonne is the prefecture of the department. Carcassonne is divided into an old and a new city. The old, fortified city stands on a rocky hill and is surrounded by two walls of the 5th and 13th centuries. In 1997, the medieval architectural ensemble was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
