The hippopotamus is a large, semiaquatic mammal native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of the largest land mammals, weighing up to 8,000 pounds. The hippo is a herbivore and spends most of its time in the water, coming out at night to graze on grass and other plants. It is a territorial animal and will defend its territory from other hippos and predators. The hippo is an important part of the African ecosystem, and its numbers are unfortunately declining due to habitat loss and hunting.
