Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary is an artificial wetland ecosystem formed at the junction of Aladağ Stream with Sarıyar Dam in the north of Sarıyar Dam, which was put into service in 1959. The capital city of Turkey is located within the borders of Davutoğlan village, Nallıhan district of Ankara province. Located on the historical silk road, Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary is 130 km from Ankara and Eskişehir, 300 km from Istanbul, 100 km from Bolu, and 30 km from Beypazarı and Nallıhan districts. Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary is one of the important bird areas of our country. It has been defined as “Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary” due to the presence of birds. At the junction of Aladağ Stream with Sarıyar Dam, an area of 425 hectares, where birds are seen more intensely, was separated as a Wildlife Development Area in 1994 and hunting was prohibited. With the prohibition of hunting in the field, the limitation of human activities and the increase in the level of awareness in the public, the birds have gained an area where they can safely breed and shelter. The Aladağ Stream and the willow groves, reeds and tamarisks formed at the place where the brook spills into the dam, and its ecological character such as large agricultural lands, poplar groves, steppe lands, rocky cliffs and hills, and its rich food availability provide the opportunity to shelter large groups of birds of different species in the area. To date, 191 bird species have been observed in Nallıhan Bird Paradise.
