In geology, a rift is caused by tectonic plates in the Earth’s lithosphere moving apart. Rifts are usually accompanied by orogeny, volcanoes and earthquakes. Rift is a linear zone where the lithosphere is being pulled apart and is an example of extensional tectonics. A rift is result of pulling aparts or extension of the crust. Mantle upwelling brings hotter asthenosphere up into colder ground. This is a landform sunken or depressed below the surrounding area.
