Shigella is a family of bacteria that causes intestinal infections called shigellosis. Shigella is a type of E. coli, but it’s classified as a separate species based on biochemical characteristics and clinical relevance. Shigella is a genus of bacteria that is Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non–spore-forming, nonmotile, rod-shaped, and is genetically closely related to Escherichia.
